Effective July 1, 2025, BNSF Railway revised its Fuel Surcharge Program (BNSF Rule Book Item 3374) to use a new mileage source for certain shipments. For direct BNSF moves (Local/Direct or Rule 11), BNSF now applies its proprietary BNSF Rail Carrier Miles instead of PC Miler miles. For interline through rates, PC Miler Rail Fuel Surcharge miles remain in use.
Tratics has always used PC Miler for fuel surcharge calculations, but this change requires us to incorporate both BNSF Rail Carrier Miles and PC Miler with conditional logic depending on rate type. BNSF has provided a mileage lookup tool, which we have been using extensively to collect enough data to cover our client's current lanes. We will continue to work on this process in a manual way, until BNSF provides an API or another automatic update process.
Until this update is fully integrated into Tratics, some rates may temporarily show fuel surcharge amounts that differ from actual BNSF invoicing. Rates affected by this issue are marked with an icon for your reference. Each week, our team will receive a new set of mileage sets to pull from BNSF, based on client rates saved or searched. We request your understanding as this change is outside of our control and we are doing the best we can, given the circumstances.
